Milanof-Schock Library Chosen as E=mc2 Outreach Site

MOUNT JOY, PA—2005 marks the centennial of Einstein’s famous equation E=mc2. In recognition of this milestone, NOVA will premiere a special program on PBS this fall based on David Bodanis’ book E=mc2: A Biography of the World’s Most Famous Equation. The program will bring to life the dramatic stories of scientists who laid the foundation for and later built upon Einstein’s revolutionary equation. WGBH’s NOVA Science Unit, with the assistance of the American Library Association Public Programs Office, has chosen the Milanof-Schock Library as one of 20 selected outreach sites from across the nation. Outreach sites receive a $2500 grant to be used for science programming and resources.

As the only outreach site in Pennsylvania, the Milanof-Schock Library will have the opportunity to become the community’s ultimate resource for E=mc2. Creative programming and resources will demystify and reveal the fascinating history of the equation and show how it affects our daily lives. Programs will include relativity in the world around us, Einstein’s and relativity’s impact on literature and language, and explanation/demonstration of the theories of relativity in layman terms. The Milanof-Schock Library will also invite scientists from industrial firms in the area and university and public school educators to serve as advisors and instructors in library programs.

The Milanof-Schock Library welcomes local science educators and scientists to participate in programs and contribute suggestions and ideas. Those interested in taking part may contact Herb Landau, library director, at (717) 653-1510, or landau@mountjoy.lib.pa.us.
