The Milanof Schock Library Receives $9870 Grant for New Shelving
MOUNT JOY--The Milanof-Schock Library has received a $9870 grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation to support the acquisition of 14 new shelving units, increasing the library’s shelf space by over 39%. Doug Levering, the Community Foundation’s Director of Programs & Initiatives, announced that the Foundation’s board of directors had approved the grant on April 15, 2004.
Herb Landau, director of the Milanof-Schock Library, said the library’s current bookshelves are at 90% capacity, limiting the amount of books the library could purchase. “A public library must spend at least 12% of its annual budget on new reading materials to be eligible for public funds. With the new shelves we will have space to house the books we must buy to satisfy patrons and state and county funding regulations,” said Landau.
In February of 1999, the “Mount Joy Library Center” moved from its small storefront building on Main Street to its current location at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, becoming the Milanof-Schock Library, after benefactors Anne Milanof and Clarence Schock. The library’s mission is to maintain and improve public resources, programs, and services reflecting informational, educational, and recreational needs of the service area. The library serves 20,960 residents from East Donegal Township, Marietta Borough, Mount Joy Borough, Mount Joy Township (eastern sector) and Rapho Township (southern sector).
The Lancaster County Community Foundation uses grant resources to support responses to emerging community needs, empower programs that have a positive, broad affect on existing community needs, and to strengthen the capabilities of non-profit organizations to operate effectively.
